Learning a language goes beyond a grammar lesson. it means opening our minds to a new culture, a way of doing things and celebrating events that have made history. Like many other holidays celebrating Halloween has evolved and changed throughout history. It was believed that on October 31st both worlds the dead and the living came together. It had according to history, a dark side and it was brought to North America by European immigrants. Nowadays Halloween is more a celebration of customs and a fun day for children and adults to dress up and go trick or treating. In the ESL/EFL world, it is part of cultivating knowledge and creating scenarios for language exchange. Celebrating Halloween has become a part of the cultural activities I have developed throughout my courses. Students of all ages used English, built confidence and learned about the history and background of this celebration. Students also had the opportunity to perform a dance or a song during the festivity in front of other classmates and parents. Below, you can see some images of past events.
Kids exchanged messages written in English amongst each other. They received treats and played games in an afternoon full of Joy.
Great job everyone! I am so proud of you kids!
